1. Find a flat surface to set your device on. This can be a music stand, an end table, ect…

2. Set your device just behind your hi-hat so you can see without having to turn your neck too far.

3. Use headphones that cover your entire ears, so you can clearly hear the examples.

4. Shut out distractions! For the time you are playing do not check text messages or social media.

5. Repeat videos multiple times, even if you can go faster. The point here is to get repetitions!

6. Treat this as a workout. When you finish, you should feel like you worked hard and your muscles should be tired.

Single Stroke 4 | Introduction

Todays online drum lesson is on the Single Stroke 4, welcome!

We're very excited to show you what we have in store for you with the Single Stroke 4, using snare exercises, beginner drum beats and fills. Before we get started a few quick notes for you on how to approach this course.

At Practice Drumming we want you to play as much as possible.

When you start these drum rudiment courses, it's a good idea to already be on your drum kit with drum sticks in hand. Most of the exercises have quick explanations, so if you don't know how to play a particular rudiment, we'd advise you watch those.

If you are familiar with that rudiment, such as the Single Stroke Four in this drumming course, you're welcome to move straight into the playing.

When it comes to the play along videos, we'd advise that you don't spend too much time worrying about the music theory of quarter notes, 8th notes, ect... (for now) and you learn by mimicking what we play. This is not to say that music theory isn't important (it is!) but for this specific approach to learning, we want you to learn by rote.

Put another way, we want you to watch the slowest speed of an exercise several times (whether on the snare drum of drum set), start to play along once you feel comfortable, then play along with the video and repeat the exercise several times.

The point of this course is not to talk at you, it's to give you a practice session, just as if you were in a drum lesson and playing along with a teacher.

That said, we also always provide the printable drum notation, so that you can practice outside of this course! See the above pdf button to access your sheet music.

Repetitions are key.

Remember, that even if you can move up in speed, it is worth spending some time playing these exercises at slower speeds to gain the control in your hands and feet, before moving on.

Good luck and we hope you enjoy this course on the Single Stroke Four!
